(She/Her/Hers)
“You are here because you matter. Because you deserve self-love and healing. I’m here to walk alongside you on your journey, always focusing on offering a sense of safety and connection in our space.”
Welcome! I’m so happy that you have found your way here, and really value your time in learning about our practice and who I am as a therapist. Many clients who come to work with me are searching for support at a time when they feel stuck, tired, or like they have already tried many ways to find relief from stressors, maybe even traumas. I see mental health as a continuous journey, and really aim to help my clients feel a renewed sense of hope that they can heal from their struggles, find new ways to cope, and experience motivation in their future. I see my clients as the experts in their lives, while I am there to provide new insights, offer skills and tools, and most importantly offer a safe connection to allow for exploration and processing.
I have a passion for working with children, teens, and adults in therapy, along with my animal partner, Teddy. Teddy is a mini goldendoodle and absolutely loves meeting with clients of all ages. To learn more about Teddy, check out his page here. Our work with clients and niche areas include play therapy, sandtray therapy, interpersonal neurobiology, polyvagal theory, Eye Movement Reprocessing and Desensitization (EMDR), somatic experiencing and animal-assisted counseling. While these are all such powerful and healing approaches, allow me to share more about who I am as a therapist.
As a therapist, I always aim to be transparent in my therapeutic relationships and make an effort to demystify our journey together. I begin every therapeutic relationship by getting to know you, and learning more about your goals to begin identifying how best to approach our work together. I know therapy is not a one size fits all approach. Thus, I find it important to focus on the connection, relationship, and history of each individual client or family I work with to show up with intentionality. I am gentle in my approach and find it important to be authentic.
Experience
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC-S), Registered Play Therapist Supervisor™ (RPT-S™), and a Certified Sandtray Therapist (IPT-CST). Before beginning my career as a therapist, I was a PreK and 2nd grade bilingual teacher in Austin ISD. I received my Master’s Degree in Professional Counseling from Texas State University in 2015 and became a school counselor in Austin ISD. I served many roles during my time as school counselor, but my favorite was always meeting with children in small groups and one on one. In 2017, I was one of three finalists for Austin ISD’s School Counselor of the year, an achievement that I still am proud of today. I never imagined that I would leave the public education system, however saw an opportunity to help children, teens, adults, and families in new ways during COVID and made the brave choice to open the doors to Mindful Connections Counseling. I have served on the Hill Country Chapter for the Texas Association for Play Therapy (HCC-TxAPT) as a social media liaison and am currently the present-elect for HCC-TxAPT. I and am an active member in the Austin and Texas play therapy community and the EMDR community. Through my experience working with children, teens, and adults in my role as a counselor, I established Mindful Connections Counseling in 2021 and continuously grow and learn through my determination for ongoing consultation and training.
My Approach to Therapy
I work with children, teens, and adults who are struggling through current life stressors or who have had distressing experiences, maybe even traumatic experiences. I am very passionate about sharing my knowledge of our nervous system – and how it protects us through our body’s responses. I believe in transparency in therapy and always provide some background knowledge on how our body works to protect us through the symptoms we are experiencing that leads us to seek therapy. Several of our beginning sessions are focused on 1. building a connection through learning more about each other (always at a pace that feels safe and comfortable for you), 2. providing some education around terms that will come up in our session related to your nervous system and 3. developing a treatment plan together that is tailored towards the goals you want to reach in therapy.
When I meet with children, I often begin by incorporating child-centered play therapy (CCPT). CCPT is a therapeutic approach that uses play as a means of communication and healing for children, particularly those ages 3-10. Through CCPT, my focus with children is supporting them in using the toys in our playroom to process and communicate any challenges they are experiencing. Working with parents is an important focus for me when supporting children, so I can communicate to parents themes I see in sessions and recommendations to support goals that we have in place. I am trained in several other play therapy modalities and will tailor treatment based on each child’s goals and through conversations with parents.
My work with preteens and teens often includes several expressive techniques that I incorporate in therapy to support with processing experiences and supporting my clients in developing greater awareness of their emotions and coping skills. This may include art, sandtray, games, and bibliotherapy. These expressive techniqus support my treatment approaches, which often include EMDR, CBT, Somatic Experiening, and Parts Work. Treatment planning occurs with my client and parents’ input to ensure we have goals in place that are comprehensive.
When I work with adults, we begin with revisiting your reasons for seeking therapy and goals for our work together. This is intertwined with techniques for getting to know each other and ensuring that we are going at a pace that feels comfortable for you. As we progress past this initial phase, we’ll begin to explore your history and ensure you are aware of the “why” behind some of the techniques incorporated in sessions. Some of the approaches I incorporate include EMDR, CBT, Somatic Experiencing, and Parts Work.
